Pergamino vertical: My work philosophy in a tale…

One day, one old cook asked to be granted an audience by his Lord. When he was received, he exposed his concerns:

-	My Lord, for several years I have been serving you faithfully in the kitchens of the palace. Never have I made a mistake. My meals always have the right touch of salt, and I serve your wine always at a suitable temperature. However, I feel my efforts are not taken into account. Instead, just a few months ago a new young cook was hired and you have already designated him Head of the Larder.
-	Hum… I see… - muttered the Lord -. But I’ll need some time to think about this question carefully… In the meantime, I’ll need you to do something for me. I would love to have some oranges served for desert tonight. Could you please go to the market and see if there are any today?

The old cook bowed and left for the marketplace. Five minutes later he was back.

-	So, my faithful cook, what can you tell me?
-	My Lord, several peasants have oranges for sale in the market today.
-	Great! How much are they?
-	Oh… I’m afraid I didn’t ask.
-	Well, at least could you see if there were enough of them to feed all my guests at the feast?
-	I didn’t ask it either, Sir…
-	OK… Did you see if they had any other kind of fruit instead of oranges, then?
-	I don’t know, my Lord, but probably…
-	I’ve heard enough. Please, sit there for a while.

Then, the Lord of the castle asked the page at the door to call the Head of Larder to his presence. When he came, the Lord gave him the same instructions he had previously given to the old cook. The young man took ten minutes to come back. Again the Lord asked: “What can you tell me?”

-	My Lord, the sweetest oranges in the market are sold by Tomas the Lame. He’s got enough of them for all your guests at the feast tonight. He also has juicy strawberries, velvety peaches and refreshing watermelon. The oranges cost 1.5 crowns a dozen, strawberries are 1 per basket, peaches are 2 a pound, and watermelon are 3 per unit. I got a special discount if we buy in large quantity. I asked him to put the oranges aside for us, but if your Majesty prefers another kind of fruit we can still change our order.
-	Very well. Thank you so much. You may go.

And turning to the old cook, who looked abashed, the Lord said:

-	So what were we talking about earlier?
-	Nothing important, my Lord. Thank you for your time, but I have to go now: there is lots of work at the kitchens...
