THIS CITY HAS SO MUCH TO OFFER!
|
|
Capital of the region
of Catalonia and second city in Spain, Barcelona is a 2,000 years old city
located in a privileged site: between the Mediterranean sea and the Collserola
hills, and limited by the rivers Llobregat and Besós. From the foundation of
the roman colony Barcino, the city has hosted different cultures and here have
developed different architecture stiles. Our first important period was the Middle Age centuries, when we became the capital
of the Crown of Catalonia and Aragon. The city’s second golden age was the
Industrial Revolution, when the city expanded and was embellished with Art Nouveau buildings and the master architect Antoni
Gaudí left his imprint in the city. Lately, the Olympic Games of 1992 boost the
modernization of urban facilities and the city opened again to the sea. The
most recent appointment for Barcelonans was the Forum of Cultures’2004, which
gave us the chance to improve one of the most run down areas in town. The 2010 the Pope Benedict came to
inaugurate the inside of the Sagrada Familia Church
(that will hopefully be totally completed by 2026, coinciding with Gaudí’s
death centenary… Barcelona is a city that never stops rethinking itself!

Tour of the Gaudí sites and the Modernism
|
à Most of my knowledge about Gaudí comes from what I learnt during the
time I
worked in the Sagrada Família church: I listened to the architects
explaining how they worked, what they had done, the problems they had
encountered and how they solved them, and also their plans and wishes for the
future; I talked to workers that had seen the church grow year after year,
people who had been working there since they were young; I had access to their
private library specialized in Gaudí’s life and works… That was definitely one
of the best experiences in my life.

à One of my best friends is a Doctor on Medieval Architecture. When I
started training as a guide we spent many evenings walking around the Old Town,
enjoying the beauty and secrets of every single corner. Still now I sometimes
spend my days off in the Gothic Quarter discovering new backstreets I have
never been to before, checking out the latest guidebook I bought to locate
gargoyles or other small details in medieval buildings, and visiting the new
fashion shops, trendy bars and restaurants or art workshops that open in this
bustling area of the city. And of course, I include my new discoveries in my
tours!

Paris, New
York, London, San Francisco… so many cities are famous for the personality of
their exciting neighborhoods. What about Barcelona, then? While every tourist
visits the Eixample and the Old Town, most people would never think of going
beyond the beaten path and discover our traditional districts. And Barcelona
has plenty of them who used to be little villages and finally lost their
independence when they became part of the city. Most of them keep charming
areas with the flavor a forgotten life. Come discover them with me!

The hills of the uptown have traditionally been the domain of the
wealthy society. Stroll around its peaceful streets, only 10 minutes by subway
from the busy city center. |
Lively squares have always been the most remarkable characteristic of
this neighborhood, where still many of its inhabitants don’t really feel part
of Barcelona. |
A fisherman and industrial past has forged strong links between the
neighbors of this quarter, where the apartments being so tiny, most of their
activities must be done outdoors. |
The name of the district means “Orchard”, and some old farmhouses are
still a memory of the area’s past. We can also see the washers where local
ladies used to do the laundry for the wealthy families. |
Born as a suburb for the immigrants arriving to work in the factories
of the Industrial Revolution, some of them have been now restored to hold
local infrastructures. It still keeps a flavor of the working class. |
One more neighborhood where locals still know each other by name, like
a little town inside the city. Their social life is sensed in squares and
cafes, and walking along its main street. |
